Jorge Camal was born in Argentina in 1963. He began working with ceramics at age 12, experimenting with glazes and techniques, and later moved into large-scale sculptures in bronze and marble. At the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, he expanded his practice by developing conceptual approaches and integrating video and photography.

Because of his dyslexia, his hands became his primary means of expression. His work is highly tactile and deeply connected to nature’s primal forces, reproduction, and sensuality. Recurring forms include fingers, arms, fists, and tongues (in Spanish, “tongue” and “language” share the same word, and speech therapy has long been part of his life).

Although his ideas emerge spontaneously, his strong technical mastery elevates his work. By combining diverse materials, kilns, and firing processes, he achieves surprising results that strengthen both form and meaning.

Jorge never works with complete bodies but with isolated parts, creating new organic entities that suggest pleasure, humor, or striking aesthetic contrasts. The assembled forms may radiate from a central core—like an explosion or sea anemone, echoing the Big Bang—or appear tightly intertwined into compact, connected shapes.

His work consistently leaves a strong impression, appealing to instinctive human themes: origins, protection, reproduction, and the joy of play. In an increasingly digital age, his art stands out for its purity, traditional craftsmanship, and modern sensibilitytimeless, yet impossible to have been made in an earlier era.
